To find the most affordable route here are a few options:
1) Travel from Intl airport to Intl airport. I.e. You'll likely find favorable prices flying into a Intl city: Rome, Paris, London, Madrid and connect to Split.
2) Within Europe, you will find European only airlines that offer low airfares. Please look into easyJet, Ryan Air, Whizz Air and Vueling.
3) Here is an example: IAD to London via United Airlines. London to Split via Ryan Air.
